Before New York

Some sessions have a clear reason behind them. A birthday, a new job, a milestone someone wants to mark. Noelle's reason was a little bigger than most.

She's an actor, an artist, a storyteller. She grew up and studied in Richmond, Virginia. And she is heading to New York City.

Before she left, she wanted portraits. Not just any portraits, but images that actually show who she is right now, at this exact moment, before the city gets a hold of her and the next version of herself begins.

Three Looks, One Afternoon

Noelle's session covered three looks, each one distinct and each one unmistakably her.

The first was denim on denim, a short-sleeve denim shirt, a striped denim skirt, green sneakers, and a green newsboy cap sitting easy on her long dark hair. There's something a little downtown, a little art-school about this look, which fits. The images have a loose, confident energy that reads exactly like someone who knows where she's going.

The second look pulled in a different direction. A taupe smock top, soft and slightly oversized, paired with a long denim maxi skirt. Barefoot on the studio floor. This is the quieter side of who she is, the one that shows up in rehearsal rooms and in the stillness before a performance. These frames have a quality that's harder to name but easy to feel.

The third look is the one that became the magazine cover. A multicolored striped turtleneck, rust corduroy pants, worn leather boots, a long blue scarf. Warm and layered and completely pulled together. She's seated on a block, cross-legged, looking directly into the lens. The cover reads: The next act. From Richmond to NYC.

It earned that headline.

What She Walked Away With

Noelle was upfront in her testimonial about something a lot of people feel but don't say out loud.

"I can have very insecure moments," she wrote, "and this was the first session involving a camera where I walked away knowing I would certainly be pleased with the results."

That sentence matters. Because she's not describing a session that talked her into feeling something she didn't feel. She's describing a session that got out of its own way and let her show up. The images followed from that.
