"Shake It Off": Caroline - Richmond, VA

Caroline drove in from Richmond for her session at Melody Smith Portrait in Petersburg, and admitted something a lot of women feel but rarely say out loud. Her inner critic is loud, harsh, and almost impossible to quiet.
She wasn't sure the camera would see anything different.
During the early part of the session, Caroline was in her head, thinking about how she should look, catching every angle she was sure was wrong.
So we stopped.
I stepped out from behind the camera, walked over, and told her to shake it off.
Then, admittedly, I demonstrated and made a total fool of myself...earning a uncertain smile before she joined in.
And something loosened.
That small moment was the hinge the whole session turned on. From there, Caroline stopped performing for the camera and started showing up as herself.
Three Looks, One Woman
We moved through three distinct styles that day in the studio, each one pulling out a different side of Caroline.
In deep plum silk florals, stretched out on the floor with her hair falling loose, there's an ease in her expression. She mentioned to me n her consult that she wanted to feel ethereal, a little bohemian even...

The second look was the most out of her comfort zone....a pair of high waisted jeans, a denim chambray button down -tucked in and belted-and her cowboy boots. She wanted a look that felt grounded, powerful, and confident..mixing in a little western bohemian vibe, I knew before she did how STUNNING she would look it this outfit...and these images became her absolute favorites from her session.
Grounded. Steady. This is a woman who knows exactly who she is.

The last look we collaborated on was something she normally wears in her day to day closet but I wanted to help her find pieces that actually matched her essence vs overpowering her. This subtle paisly print paired with a soft brown turtleneck becomes secondary to her beautiful features and her glorious red hair versus competing. The best part is that this look can translate to any season!

What Caroline Said Afterward
When I asked Caroline what someone would understand about her just from looking at these images, without knowing her at all, she said they'd see someone with a point of view.
Someone confident.
Someone with a free spirit and a sense of fun.

She didn't expect to walk out with a new sense of appreciation for a version of herself she hadn't been owning and frankly, denying.

Since seeing her portraits, Caroline says she walks into rooms differently now. She walks taller. She makes more eye contact. And she gives far fewer apologies for things that never needed one in the first place.
Her words, not mine: "You will be looking at your essence, not just another photo of yourself."

Worth the Drive from Richmond
Caroline is one of many Richmond area women who make the short trip to our Petersburg studio for this exact experience. If you're on the fence about booking a session, here's what she wants you to know.
"This isn't just a photoshoot. It's a day built entirely around you, your hair and makeup done, your wardrobe planned, someone paying close attention to how you move and what makes you soften."

She put it simply: "You don't just feel pampered and beautiful. You feel seen.
"Stay open. Trust the process. The result might leave you speechless too."
